5 Easy Ways to Declutter Your Home When You Feel Stuck

You are here:

Your home should be a place of comfort, not stress. If clutter is making it hard to relax, you’re not alone. The good news? A clutter-free home isn’t out of reach! Here are five practical tips to help you declutter your home and create a space that brings you peace.

1. Start Small: The 10-Minute Declutter Challenge

Feeling overwhelmed? Instead of tackling your entire house, start in one low-stress area like a bathroom or entryway. Set a timer for 10 minutes and grab two bags: one for donations and one for trash. Focus on clearing obvious clutter, then reset the timer and keep going if you’re motivated. (Need accountability? 2. Declutter by Sections: Break It Down Room by Room

Instead of randomly picking up items, work systematically through each section of a room and thengo deep with your questions to increase awareness. Ask yourself:
✔ Do I love this?
✔ Do I use this
✔ Do I need this?
✔ Does this serve me in my current season of life?
✔ Is it broken, and will I realistically fix it?
If the answer is no, add it to your black trash bag.

3. Create a “Home” for Everything

One of the biggest reasons clutter accumulates is because items don’t have designated spaces. Group similar items together and assign them permanent storage spots.

4. Set Up an Exit Strategy

To Keep clutter out of your home, you need an exit strategy to hold items you want to part with on an ongoing basis. Just as items come into your home, they need a plan to leave. Set up separate bins for donations, e-waste, and hazardous waste disposal. Decide how often you’ll empty them—once a week or once a month—and schedule donation drop-offs at places like The Salvation Army.

5. Get Help: You Don’t Have to Do It Alone

Decluttering can feel overwhelming, but you don’t have to do it alone. Partner with a friend for a decluttering swap day, or hire a professional organizer for hands-on support. Need expert help? Schedule a consultation with Sensational Organizing today!

  1. My mom would really benefit from a service like this as she plans on moving soon. I think having an extra set of hands like you mentioned would be really good for her. We will start looking into organizing services to make her life a whole lot easier.

    • Alexandria,

Moving is a stressful time for many. But it can also bring about feeling of a fresh start. Taking a few days to de-clutter before the move can help you assess what you own and what items you want to take to the new home.

I am glad you found this post helpful. You can also go to napo.net to find an organizer in your area.

      Good luck!

      Hugs,
      Elva
