Spring is Here—Time to Declutter!
Spring excites me—not only because my birthday is around the corner but because of what this season brings. The blooming of flowers, birds in the air—it’s a reminder that God has perfect timing for everything.
Just like the seasons change, we must be good stewards of our lives and prune back when needed in order for our spaces to flourish. The beginning of spring is the perfect time to refresh your home, and that includes your garage! Get excited about your spring cleaning as you prepare your spaces to support you in thriving.
Why Garage Organization Matters
When you set out to organize your garage, it can feel overwhelming at first. But with a plan and teamwork, it definitely can be a lot easier than you think
The Minimalists have a saying: “Love people and use things because the opposite never works.” When sorting through your garage, ask yourself—are your things serving you? Are they enhancing your life and experiences with loved ones?
I’m all for clearing the clutter and getting it OUT—pronto! But sometimes, selling unused items can also be a great way to make extra cash. If your garage is overflowing with forgotten furniture, sports equipment, or home improvement supplies, it’s time to take action.

Step 1: Prepping Your Garage for Organization
Garages often become a dumping ground for items that don’t have a place in the house. But remember, your garage is an extension of your home—it should be functional and organized.
Create an Exit Strategy
Before you begin, designate a space in your garage for items that need to leave your home. This could be a “donation station” where items stay until you schedule a pickup.
Remove Everything and Sort
When you set out to organize your garage, it can feel overwhelming. The best way to start is by removing everything—yes, everything!—and sorting it into piles in your driveway.
Common garage categories include:
Kids’ Toys
Sports Equipment
Home Improvement Supplies (Paint, tools, etc.)
Lawn & Garden Tools
Holiday Decorations
Camping Gear
Overflow Kitchen & Party Supplies
Photos, Memorabilia, & Paperwork (Important: Do not go through these now—save them for another day!)
Set up three sections:
Sell – Items you want to sell online or at a garage sale
Donate – Items in good condition but no longer needed
Trash – Anything broken, damaged, or unusable
Clean the Space
Before putting anything back, sweep out the garage, use a yard blower to clear dust, and get rid of spiderwebs. A clean garage is much more enjoyable to use!
Step 2: Organizing Your Garage Efficiently
Once you’ve cleared out the garage, it’s time to organize!
Smart Garage Storage Tips
Ditch Cardboard Boxes – They take up too much space and attract pests. Use bins instead.
Group Like Items Together – Store similar things in one place (e.g., all sports equipment together).
Declutter Ruthlessly – Only keep what you actually use.
Create Zones – Designate areas for different categories (e.g., holiday decorations, tools, camping gear).
Choose the Right Storage Solutions
Clear Bins: Our go-to for visibility and organization. Costco sells durable, commercial-grade bins (3 for $15).
Labels: Even if bins are clear, labeling helps family members know where things go.
Storage Racks: If you have floor space, Whalen racks from Costco ($159) are industrial-strength and spacious.
Wall & Ceiling Storage: Use systems like Elfa shelves (great for bulk storage) or the FastTrack system for hanging tools.
Parking Zones: Use tape to mark designated spots for lawnmowers, bikes, and kids’ ride-on cars.
Step 3: Selling Your Unwanted Items
Now that your garage is clean and organized, it’s time to sell your unused items! While yard sales are an option, selling online is often faster and easier.
Best Selling Platforms
Facebook Marketplace – Great for local buyers; easy to use.
OfferUp/LetGo – Quick listings for household items.
Poshmark – Best for clothing, handbags, and accessories.
ThredUp – Send in gently used clothes and let them sell for you.
How to Sell Successfully
Clean Your Items – Present them in the best condition possible.
Take Great Photos – Use natural light and multiple angles.
Be Descriptive – List size, brand, condition, and any defects.
Price to Sell – Research similar items to find the right price.
Decide on Pickup or Shipping – Be clear on how buyers will receive their items.
The Final Touch
Once you’ve put everything back in your newly organized garage, schedule a donation pickup and haul away the trash. If you have large items, consider renting a dumpster for easy disposal.
There’s nothing more satisfying than stepping into a clean, functional, and clutter-free garage. I LOVE hearing clients say, “Oh my gosh, I can see my floors!”—it’s the best feeling!
