How to organize a small closet.

Our surroundings have a significant impact on our emotions and overall well-being; moreover, a cluttered space can easily contribute to stress. Indeed, that was the case for this client, who struggled with a small, disorganized closet during her emotional healing journey. To help reduce her stress and bring order to her life, we transformed her small closet into an efficient, peaceful space. In this blog post, I’ll share practical tips on how to organize a small closet to maximize efficiency and peace of mind.

Cluttered closet gets a makeover

The Challenge: An Overcrowded, Disorganized Small Closet

When we first entered her small closet, it was nearly impossible to enter. A pile of clothes covered the floor, along with a suitcase from a recent trip, creating an overwhelming mess. Her previous attempt at organizing—sorting clothes by color—had proven ineffective, as the closet was too cramped for that method to work efficiently.

Although she had installed shoe racks to make better use of vertical space, her growing shoe collection had outgrown the system, with shoes spilling into the entrance of her home. Furthermore, the built-in shelves, which weren’t adjustable, caused clutter by making jeans fall and wasting precious space. Consequently, the result was daily frustration and an urgent need for a functional organization system, especially given her frequent travels and the need to pack quickly.

The Transformation Process: Customizing Your Small Closet

We began by emptying the entire small closet and categorizing her clothes into different types—pants, sweaters, shirts, etc. During this process, we realized her secondary closet, which had become a catch-all space, could be put to better use. A helpful tip when organizing a small closet is to relocate items that are only used occasionally to a secondary storage space.

As we sorted, we discovered that her workout clothes and occasional heels didn’t need to take up space in the main closet. We relocated those to the secondary closet. This freed up her small closet to serve its true purpose: organizing her daily wardrobe.

Once we sorted her belongings, we carefully mapped out where everything should go. To maximize the fixed shelves for shoe storage, we used acrylic stacking shoe organizers to store shoes vertically.

We hung her pants to make them easier to browse, allowing her to quickly find the right pair. We relocated the bulky sweaters, which were taking up valuable space, and gave her more room for frequently used items. Above the closet, we added stacking bins for seasonal items such as scarves, bathing suits, winter gear, and hats. To make the most of every inch of space, we also installed a jewelry organizer on the door, providing additional room for her jewelry collection. This systematic approach not only maximized her small closet’s storage but also made it a functional and organized space.

The Client’s Reaction: Enjoying a Functional Closet

The transformation of her small closet was striking, both visually and emotionally. Our client was thrilled at how much easier it became to find her favorite garment pieces. The cluttered disorganized space, that once frustrated her, was replaced by a sense of peace. With everything neatly organized, she found getting dressed simpler and more enjoyable. This newfound order not only made her mornings smoother but also significantly contributed to her emotional healing.
